Doug Perkins Appointed to the Board of Trustees

At a Special Meeting held on May 7, 2008, the Board of Trustees of the Del Mar Union School District appointed Mr. Doug Perkins to the Board. Mr. Perkins will fill the seat left vacant on March 12, 2008 with the resignation of former Board Member Linda Crawford until the term expires in November 2008. The District advertised the vacant position in the local paper and on the District website.

Mr. Perkins was selected for the vacant seat from a field of seven well-qualified candidates with very diverse backgrounds. After questioning the candidates and narrowing the field, the Board discussed the qualifications of each finalist. The Board then approved the appointment by a unanimous vote.

Lottery Date for the Kindergarten Spanish Discovery Program at Del Mar Heights School

As many of you know, the Del Mar Union School District’s first foreign language program will begin in the Fall of 2008, with Spanish language instruction being offered at Del Mar Heights School. Two classes (40 students) at kindergarten will have in-depth instruction in Spanish as part of the regular school day.

As previously communicated, the district will hold a random unbiased lottery if the requests exceed the number of spaces available in the Spanish Program. At a Special Board Meeting held Wednesday, May 7, 2008, the Board approved holding the random unbiased lottery on Friday, May 16 at the District Office. Therefore, if you intend to submit an application for the Kindergarten Spanish Discovery Program at Del Mar Heights, you must complete and return the application to your school office no later than Thursday, May 15. The results of the random unbiased lottery will be mailed to you by Friday, May 23.

2008/2009 Student Information Form

During the final month of this school year, principals will begin developing preliminary 2008/2009 student placements. The placements and class rosters will be finalized in August. Every effort is made to balance classes according to the following criteria:

        ~ boy-girl ratio
        ~ class size
        ~ English language skills
        ~ enrollment in special education
        ~ the need to group or separate children

Parent input is yet another factor we are pleased to consider as we develop classes. If you would like to share information, which we may not already have, please complete a Student Information Form and return it to your school office no later than Friday, May 9, 2008.

Julian Martinez selected 2008 DMUSD Classified Employee of the Year

Interim Superintendent, Janet Bernard, proudly announced at a District Maintenance Staff Meeting the selection of Julian Martinez as the DMUSD Classified Employee of the Year. Julian has been a valuable employee of the DMUSD for the last five years. He was initially hired to fill the position of Night Custodian at Torrey Hills School working with Gary Wilson, Principal of Torrey Hills School. When asked about his former staff member Mr. Wilson said, “I had the privilege of opening Torrey Hills School with Julian as my night custodian. Of all the employees I have worked with over the years, he is one of the most loved and cared for by all the teachers and staff. He was so helpful, patient, and considerate of all the employees and would work to have everyone happy and their needs taken care of. Julian has a tremendous loyalty, a good heart, strong work ethic, and he would help anyone in any way he could. He loves kids of all ages and treats everyone with respect and consideration.”
