One of the most critical components of effective teaching is ongoing professional development. During each month, two of the minimum day Wednesdays provide scheduled time allowing for consistent professional development and collaboration.
At Ashley Falls, teachers have worked as a Professional Learning Community to collaborate regarding student performance based on specific data in order to effectively meet the needs of every child. Teachers have examined school wide and grade level data, been trained in new assessment tools and teaching strategies, and evaluated progress toward school wide goals.
It would be a mistake to view minimum day Wednesdays as “extra free time for the teachers.” It should be viewed as essential time for teachers to gather as a group of professionals to receive training and share information in order to meet the needs of every child in an increasingly demanding field. I recognize that our day-to-day work is not that which is a matter of life and death. We are however, greatly responsible for equipping young people with the knowledge and skills to progress successfully through their education. As those of you with more than one child knows, every child is different. They come to us wonderfully individual, with different social, emotional, and academic needs. We are committed to meeting the needs of every child and the time on Wednesdays allows us to make tremendous progress towards honoring that commitment.
