Congratulations Don Birkett Our Teacher of the Year

We are thrilled to announce the 2009-2010 Del Mar Heights School Teacher of the Year is Special Day Class teacher, Don Birkett. Don has been an unparalleled asset to the Del Mar Heights community during his entire 29 year career, so it is only fitting he receive this honor as a token of our appreciation for everything he has contributed to our school.

Every year without fail one or two of Don's former students come back to say thank you to the teacher who changed their lives. This is truly a testament to what a gifted and talented educator he is. Not only has he been able to connect with his students, he has brought out the best in them and inspired them to pursue their dreams.

What makes Don such an incredible teacher is his ability to know exactly what each of his students' strengths are and then teach each individual student in a way that maximizes their ability to learn. His impact on students' lives has been immeasurable and lasts far beyond their time in his classroom.

Beyond being a gifted teacher in the classroom Don is an incredibly strong advocate for his students. He is also a great team player and listens to input from parents, other teachers and the students themselves to make sure he is teaching to the unique needs of the student and not just relying on what worked for him in the past.

Math Counts!

Del Mar Heights Math Team members Darren Edmonds, Griffin Danninger, Aidan Kahng, and Adrian Liao participated in the county-wide Mathcounts Competition at UCSD this past weekend. Twenty-five schools participated, and since the competition was open to grades 6-8, many of these schools had all or mostly eighth graders on their math teams, while Del Mar Heights had only sixth graders. The top five teams and the top five individuals (who are not already included in one of the winning teams) continue to the State level competition at UC Irvine in March. Despite the tough competition from seventh and eighth graders, the Del Mar Heights team placed ninth out of the twenty-five schools. And Aidan Kahng will advance to the State level as an individual! Kindergarten Visitations and Registration

Kindergarten visitations for students who will be 5 years old by December 2, 2010, will be held on Monday, April19 and Tuesday, April 20. Visitation times will be 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. both days. Visitations are designed to be for adults only.

Kindergarten registration will be Wednesday, April 21 from 1:00 - 6:00 p.m. in the School Office. Please complete the registration packet you receive at the visitation and bring it with you, along with 2 current utility bills, your child's original birth certificate and immunization records. Incomplete packets will not be accepted.

Third grade parents please plan to attend the third grade musical Star Search today. For the performance, students should wear black t-shirt/turtleneck and dark jeans with pockets.Performance times are:
