That was then, this is WOW!
Dear Hills Community, As we begin a new school year at The Hills, I find myself reflecting on the ever strong commitment our community has toward this little school and the young learners who are at the heart of every decision we make. I continue to have every confidence in our teaching staff to provide a rigorous academic program in a caring, nurturing environment.

Message from Superintendent Peabody
I would like to thank everyone in the Del Mar community for the warm welcome I have received. It has been a pleasure visiting the schools and meeting parents and staff. I would like to take the opportunity to dispel a rumor that the Del Mar Hills Academy of Arts and Sciences will be closed. The Board of Trustees has taken action that the district will not close Del Mar Hills Academy. Del Mar Hills is a viable, solid community option for incoming kindergartners and new families and they are looking forward to growing their vibrant school community.

Classified Employee of the Year - Tamara Radford!
In 2007, Tamara became the Multimedia Specialist/Librarian. In this capacity, she has greatly increased the role of the library in the Del Mar Hills curriculum through engaging activities like genre studies. Tamara works very hard to make the library a fun and exciting place to visit with the constantly changing themes found throughout the year. She engages students on every reading level: “I’m a Reading Nut” book club for avid readers; “Everyone a Reader” program for struggling readers; and, “I Read to the Principal” program for everyone who wants to show Mrs. Fitzpatrick their individual successes in reading.
Mrs. Radford’s contagious smile, positive nature and commitment to the Hills’ staff, community and children make her an outstanding addition to our school!

Teacher of the Year - Erik Bienke!
Erik Bienke first started working at Del Mar Hills as a student teacher in 2002 under the guidance of master teacher Katherine Weidmann, and in the exact same classroom that he has been teaching second grade in for the last six years. Erik grew up in Schaumburg, Illinois, and was inspired to become a teacher by the many excellent teachers he had growing up, especially his third grade teacher, Mrs. Janet Knell, and high school choir director and drama coach, Mr. John A. Van Hook. He attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and Theatre (with distinction). He obtained his teaching credential with emphasis in Crosscultural, Language & Academic Development (CLAD) from National University, where he is in the process of completing his Masters degree in Crosscultural Education.
He is so thankful to work with such a high performing and dedicated staff at Del Mar Hills, and most honored to have the opportunity, each and every day, to touch the lives of his students and their families.
