Sage Canyon students celebrated Earth Day 2009 by making seed balls for the San Diego River Valley Coastal Sage Scrub Restoration Project. The US Forest Service and Wildfire Research Institute have partnered in a project to restore over 200 acres of native habitat on the Cleveland National Forest that was burned during the 2007 Witch Fire. The seed balls are utilized to revegetate areas with a dry climate where rainfall is minimal and unpredictable. The clay protects the seeds from the drying sun, wind, rodents, birds, and insects. When the rainy season begins, the water permeates the clay allowing the seeds to germinate while the compost provides nutrients for the emergent seedlings. Thanks to the Sage Canyon PTA for their vision and volunteer support for this wonderful Earth Day project for our students!

The Sage Canyon family is pleased to recognize our employees of the year. Our Classified Employee of the Year, Mr. John Graciano, began as a night custodian when the school opened in September 2000. For the past five years, he has served as the plant manager and can always be depended on for all necessary and important daily functions. John’s disposition is incredible and he always goes above and beyond to assist all students, staff, and parents. John is personable, considerate, flexible and a constant “Johnny on the spot”. “Mr. John” has excellent rapport with students and supports their needs while serving as an outstanding male role model and father figure. Our Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Robin Gordon, was nominated and selected as Sage Canyon’s teacher of the year by the entire staff. Robin is a gifted and professional educator. She brings a smile to school everyday to greet her students, as well as a brain full of ideas to make the classroom learning environment rich and meaningful. Robin is keenly aware of fourth grade standards and works tirelessly to ensure that all her students reach their individual and collective learning goals. In addition to being a great classroom teacher, Robin is always willing to share ideas and support staff members during Professional Learning Community (PLC) work.
