The Children of Haiti Need Our Help!

We are partnering with a local non-profit to help children in Haiti.  Children’s Hunger Fund (CHF) has an established network of trained volunteers in Haiti and the Dominican Republic that have been entering the devastated areas and personally delivering aid to those in need. But more resources are needed, and we need your help.  The Haitian people are in desperate need of many things, but one of the most important is hygiene. Hand-washing and bathing is the primary way to kill bacteria and prevent disease.
During the week of March 15th, our Sage Canyon family will be collecting the specific items listed below for children in Haiti.  Please bring your donated items to the main office and place them in the marked receptacle.  We will also be collecting them curbside on Thursday and Friday during morning drop off and afternoon pick up.  The items do not need to be specifically for children.
– 12 oz. liquid Shampoo
– 12 oz. liquid Body wash
– 8 oz. tube of Toothpaste
– Soft Toothbrushes
PLEASE NO BARS OF SOAP
Through the Children’s Hunger Fund, these items will be shipped to Haiti and delivered to those in need.   For more information about CHF, please visit their website at [ http://www.chfus.org/ ]http://www.chfus.org/ .

Junior Olympics returns to Sage Canyon

The Del Mar Jr. Olympic Skills Competition is back at Sage Canyon. This competition is for all students in the DMUSD, ages 8-13. This skills participation program provides boys and girls the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities in four sports- basketball, soccer, tennis, and track & field. The program is designed to encourage youth participation in sports while promoting sportsmanship.
The Del Mar Jr. Olympic Skills is a program in which boys and girls compete separately and may advance through two levels of competition, including Local Qualifying and Del Mar City Finals. This year wewill be hosting the Local Qualifying Event at Sage Canyon specifically for Sage Canyon student athletes! The Local Qualifying Event will take place Wednesday, March 31, 2010 from 12:30-2:45pm on the Sage Canyon field and blacktop. As your schools physical educator, I believe we have an extremely talented group of student athletes to represent our school and the DMUSD.
If you would like to volunteer for this event please contact Mr. Trent Tracy, P.E. Teacher, tracy@dmusd.org as soon as possible. We need a few fun and energetic sports fans to help with keeping score, organizing event lines, working stop watches, and recording the participants points and times. It will be a fun filled and exciting afternoon!
Thank you for all of your continuous support!

5th Annual Sage Canyon Family Science Fair --January 25-29, 2010

We hope you are working on (or have already completed) your Science Fair project!  (Please remember that all students submitting a Science Fair project must have an approved project proposal from Ms. Cavallini or Mrs. Asselin.)  Please be sure to use the display boards provided by the PTA and available in Ms. Cavallini's room.  Have your project ready, and bring it to the MUR before school on the morning of Monday, January 25.  Parents should be aware that this would be a good day to plan on arriving early, parking and walking in to help your child deliver their Science Fair project to the MUR. If you need access to an electrical outlet, please contact Laura Eidelson: leidelson@san.rr.com.
During the week of the Science Fair, there will be two  "Open House" style Family Science Nights: Tuesday, January 26 and Thursday, January 28.  On these nights, families can walk through the Science Fair and look at the students' projects.
Also, please remember to come and pick up your child's project on Friday, January 29th after school. Questions?  Please contact Laura Eidelson at leidelson@san.rr.com.
The Science Fair guidelines packets are available for download in the publications section of this website. The Sage Canyon Family Science Fair is non-competitive and open to all students and families.

Walk to School Day

On Wednesday, October 7th, Sage Canyon School will join schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day. The event will begin at 7:00 a.m. with kids, parents and community leaders walking from the starting location at Carmel Country Road and Derrydown. Walkers will arrive at the Sage Canyon campus at 7:30 a.m. for the annual Dad’s Club Bagel Breakfast, music, contest awards, raffle prizes and fun!

In the U.S., International Walk to School Day includes 5,000 schools from all 50 states. Walkers from the U.S. joined children and adults in 40 countries around the world. Walk to School events work to create safer routes for walking and bicycling and emphasize the importance of issues such as increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, traffic congestion, concern for the environment, gas conservation, and building connections between families, schools and the broader community.

Fond Good-Byes and a Warm Welcome

As we closed the school year last June, we wished fond good-byes to Leandra Kalt who joined the Ocean Air staff as a full-time fourth grade teacher, Lindsay Bullis who relocated to Portland, Oregon, and Janese Swanson who took a position with the US Mint in Washington, D.C.
Over the summer, several changes were made to adjust staffing based on changing enrollment patterns at the various grade levels. Susan Garfein, will now be a member of the second grade team and former fourth grade teacher Michele Chavez will be joining the Kindergarten team as a full time Kindergarten teacher.
In addition, we are welcoming one new addition to the Sage Canyon staff and one returning staff member. Please extend a warm welcome to the new members of the Sage Canyon family!
Shauna Friedemann
Shauna is returning to Sage Canyon after a one-year leave of absence. During her leave last year, Shauna served as a Distinquished Teacher in Residence at Cal State San Marcos teaching future educators. Prior to her leave, Shauna taught at Sage Canyon since the opening in September 2000. Shauna is known for her nuturing and challenging classroom environment and her expertise in Language Arts. She has been an author and trainer for many writing projects at the San Diego County Office of Education. Shauna is thrilled to be back at Sage Canyon and is excited to be teaching a blended 4/5 class this year.
Kelly Hadland
While Kelly is the newest member of the Sage Canyon staff, she is a familiar face to many students and families. Kelly became a part of the Sage Canyon family in the spring of 2008 while completing her student teaching with Sarah Raskin in third grade and Linda Newquist in Kindergarten. She spent the entire 08-09 school year serving as a long-term substitute in fifth grade for Maria Schwab and Michelle Turnball while they were out on extended maternity leaves. Kelly is a graduate of UCSD and is overjoyed to become a contracted teacher at Sage Canyon working with the fifth grade team.

Welcome Back

Dear Sage Canyon Families,

I hope that your summer was all that you hoped it would be, filled with fun family activities and relaxation. During July and August the Sage Canyon campus was a buzz with a comprehensive deep cleaning and a myriad of maintenance projects that included a slurry seal and repainting of the parking lot and playgrounds, new carpet in all classrooms, refreshed landscaping in front of the school and repair and painting of the playground ball walls. Hats off to our day custodian John Graciano for his attention to detail and commitment to ensuring that our children have a safe, clean, and beautiful learning environment.

Thanks are also in order to the Sage Canyon PTA and the Del Mar Schools Educational Foundation for their commitment and monetary support for teaching and learning. The PTA gifts to school include seven new computers for our primary computer lab and the Playground Partners program provided by the Encinitas YMCA every Tuesday and Thursday during lunch recess. Through the generous support of the foundation, our ESC program remains intact with programming for students in art, music, technology, science, and physical education.

This year, we also have new staff members that anxiously await your warm Sage Canyon welcome! As you read their biographies, I know that you will immediately recognize the individual and collective strengths and resources that they bring to the Sage Canyon staff.

As our partners, your active involvement in the daily work of Sage Canyon School is invaluable. I look forward to seeing you Monday morning and at Back to School Night on Thursday evening, September 3rd from 6:30-7:45.

Warmest regards and welcome back---I missed you!

Peg LaRose, Ed.D.
Principal

Earth Day 2009

Sage Canyon students celebrated Earth Day 2009 by making seed balls for the San Diego River Valley Coastal Sage Scrub Restoration Project. The US Forest Service and Wildfire Research Institute have partnered in a project to restore over 200 acres of native habitat on the Cleveland National Forest that was burned during the 2007 Witch Fire. The seed balls are utilized to revegetate areas with a dry climate where rainfall is minimal and unpredictable. The clay protects the seeds from the drying sun, wind, rodents, birds, and insects. When the rainy season begins, the water permeates the clay allowing the seeds to germinate while the compost provides nutrients for the emergent seedlings. Thanks to the Sage Canyon PTA for their vision and volunteer support for this wonderful Earth Day project for our students!
