Congratulations Shauna Friedemann!
Congratulations to Sage Canyon fourth grade teacher, Shauna Friedemann, for being selected for The Distinguished Teacher in Residence (DTiR) program at Cal State San Marcos. Shauna will be on loan to Cal Sate San Marcos for the 08-09 and 09-10 school years. The DTiR program evolved out of a mutual desire for local school districts to be directly involved in teacher preparation at the university and the university faculty's desire to remain closely connected with schools. Shauna will be instrumental in establishing and maintaining close connections between teacher education and exemplary school practices by training new teachers in current concepts of teacher roles, instructional pedagogy and effective schools as practiced in model area schools.

Ryan Stanley Selected as New Assistant Principal at Sage Canyon
On February 20, 2008, the Board of Trustees of the Del Mar Union School
District approved the appointment of Mr. Ryan Stanley as the new
Assistant Principal at Sage Canyon Elementary School. Mr. Stanley
replaces Ms. Julie Lerner, who became a new elementary Principal in the
Poway Unified School District on January 7th. During the months of
December and January, the District advertised the Assistant Principal
position in education administration journals that have state-wide
circulation.
On February 4, a six-person team, consisting of two Sage Canyon
classroom teachers, two principals, the DMUSD Director of Personnel,
and the DMUSD Superintendent, interviewed a number of qualified
candidates, including Mr. Stanley. On February 7, 2008, District Superintendent, Thomas Bishop; Assistant
Superintendent, Janet Bernard; Director of Personnel, Rodger Smith; and
Sage Canyon Principal, Peg LaRose, interviewed Mr. Stanley as the
finalist for the position.
The research into Mr. Stanley’s qualifications revealed that he has
earned the respect and admiration of teachers, administrators, parents
and students in the Poway Unified School District where he has served
as a very successful primary teacher and Reading Recovery teacher on
special assignment.
Mr. Stanley is extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of teaching and
learning and possesses strong communication skills. He is personable
and has the best interests of students as his driving priority. Ryan
has a strong background in staff development and literacy and has
provided professional development to teachers and administrators in
Poway Unified and at San Diego State University. He will be a strong
addition to the Sage Canyon staff and the district’s talented
administrative team.
Ryan and his wife, a third grade teacher, live in Poway with their
son, Cole, and are expecting a new addition to their family this spring.
Mr. Stanley’s first day of employment in the Del Mar Union School District is scheduled for Tuesday, March 4, 2008.

Check out the Sage Canyon Garden!
Heartfelt appreciation to former Sage Canyon student, Eric Breault, for selecting the Sage Canyon garden as his Eagle Scout project. Eric, along with the support of family and friends, put in over 200 hours upgrading the raised garden beds, the watering system, and adding additional features to the garden that created a more student-friendly environment for learning. Gratitude also goes to parent Michelle Shewmaker for her vision and constant care for the garden. The garden now features biome theme beds as well as many other interesting and fun plantings. Thanks also go out to the Kids Korp and local Brownie and Girl Scout troops for their assistance in maintaining our beautiful new garden and the Sage Canyon PTA fopr their financial assistance.
