Sycamore Ridge is a 10 - 10 School!

In March of 2007, the public schools in the state received their Base Academic Performance Index (API) reports. The API is the numeric rank ranging from a low of 200 to a high of 1000. Our school’s 2007 Base API is 937, up from 921 last year. The API measures a school’s academic performance and growth. The API rank shows the relative position (ranking) of a school’s API score compared to the API’s of other schools of the same type. A school will receive a rank on a scale of 1 to 10. There are two kinds of API ranks: a Statewide Rank (a school’s API compared to all other schools in the state) and a Similar School’s Rank (a school’s API compared to 100 other schools that have similar opportunities and challenges). A school ranked in decile 10 would have an API that is in the top 10 percent of the API in the state. We can all be very proud that Sycamore Ridge students achieved an Academic Performance Statewide rank of 10 and a Similar School’s rank of 10 for the 2007 school year. From the CDE data files, there are 119 schools with a 10 Statewide Rank plus a 10 Similar School Rank out of 5245 elementary schools. There are eleven 10 of 10 ranking in SD County out of 446 elementary schools. Quite an accomplishment, indeed, and true testimony to our belief that it “Takes a Village…”  Congratulations Sycamore Ridge Villagers!

CONGRATULATIONS Ms. Howard! Sycamore Ridge Teacher of the Year!

Student-Teacher-Professional!  These three words are an accurate description of Jen Howard, the teacher that changes children one lesson at a time, one book at a time, one hug at a time, one morning meeting at a time, and one day at a time.

Study Buddy Program Spring 2008

We are off to a great start with our spring Study Buddy sessions meeting on Mondays now through May 5.  We have a very focused and attentive group of teens from our local high schools and our little buddies are excited to attend each week.
In addition to assisting with homework, we are focusing on our PeaceBuilders program.  Our goal is to incorporate activities into each meeting that focus on each section of the pledge.
We began by defining what each statement in the pledge means.  During the next meeting, we asked for each student to reflect on any praise they received or gave through their day.  If no praise was received or given, perhaps there was an instance that they would have liked to hear some praise.  Included are two examples of student’s responses.
We feel that the pairing of our students with these teens is an excellent venue for the PeaceBuilders curriculum, because we have the experience of the teens to draw from.
Additionally, we see the opportunity to reinforce a positive community experience here at Sycamore Ridge.
