We all want kids to have good values – and strong character. But good
character doesn’t just happen. It’s up to us to lay a strong foundation
for character development by teaching children right from wrong and by
acting as positive role models. Implementation of a comprehensive
character education program that fosters inclusion of and respect for
all students is the focus of the CHARACTER COUNTS curriculum that will
be implemented at Sycamore Ridge School. The staff is dedicated to
strengthening the character of our students through promotion of the
Six Pillars of Character: Respect, Fairness, Caring, Citizenship,
Responsibility, and Trustworthiness.
We can work together as a team to reinforce the importance of good character. Here’s how you can help:
TEACH!
Teach your child that character counts – that their success and
happiness will depend on who they are inside, not what they have or how
they look. Use examples from your own life’s experience, history and
the news to teach them about core values.
ENFORCE!
Reward good behavior (usually, praise is enough) and by discouraging
instances of bad behavior by imposing fair, consistent consequences
that prove you are serious about character. Demonstrate courage and
core values when it is difficult to do so.
ADVOCATE!
Be an advocate for character. Don’t be neutral about the importance of
character or casual about improper conduct. Be clear and uncompromising
that you want and expect your child to be trustworthy, respectful,
responsible, fair, caring and good citizens.
MODEL!
Remember, everything you do, and don’t do, sends a message about your
values. Be sure your messages reinforce lessons about doing the right
thing even when it is hard to do so. When you slip (most of us do), act
the way you want your children to behave when they act improperly.
Children will learn that a sincere apology is a step in the right
direction.
