Parents, thank you for your support of our students, school and classroom.  If you did not order a school supply packet for your child in June, the following is a list of optional school supplies for each grade level. Please have your child bring them to school on the first day of class.  Thank you!

Have a great summer!

All of us at Torrey Hills Elementary School wish you a fun, relaxing and safe summer. Don't forget to wear sunblock, do the 'stingray shuffle' at the beach, and take lots of pictures whether you are at home or abroad. We will see you in August.

PTA Online Survey

The PTA is asking you to look in this week's Wednesday folder and to check your email to see the web address of their brief online survey. By taking this brief survey, you will be providing the Torrey Hills Elementary School PTA with information that will best guide their vision for the future. The survey is hosted on the Survey Monkey website. Make it a family affair and let your child demonstrate their technological savvy by finding the website on your home computer and clicking your answers to the questions! Thank you for making time to provide valuable feedback to our PTA.

Spring PTA Carnival

On Friday, April 25, families of Torrey Hills got together for a fun and festive evening of games, food and entertainment. The PTA fund raiser Dance Party and Carnival raised $5500.00, including a $1500.00 donation from sponsor Wells Fargo Bank Torrey Hills. Events included a rock climbing wall, jumbo slide, cake walk and a dunk tank with some familiar faces as ‘dunkees’, including Mrs. Paul and Mr. Carlos! Some brave students performed on the karaoke and many students were seen with creative face paint designs.  Vendors at the event included Rock Rental Inc., Domino’s Pizza Del Mar, All Around Mobile Music, Sparkle by Kristyn Culmone and generous support from Wells Fargo Bank Torrey Hills. Thank you all for coming to the carnival and supporting our PTA!

Del Mar Union School District Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Uma Krishnan

NEWS UPDATE: On Friday, April 4th, Torrey Hills staff had a visit from intermin Superindent Mrs. Janet Bernard who made a special announcement about our own Mrs. Krishnan. We were aware she was our Torrey Hills Elementary School Teacher of the Year. Mrs. Bernard arrived to tell Torrey Hills Staff that Mrs. Krishnan is DMUSD Teacher of the Year!

Have you ever dissected a squid? Held a live turtle or lizard? Watched chickens hatch from eggs? Built a tower out of K'Nex and have it tested on the UCSD Shake Platform? Participated in the Invention Convention, Science Olympiad, or Science Field Day? Learned about renewable energy at the San Diego Eco Center? Gained a deeper understanding about a specific habitat in the ocean during MARE week? Learned about the scientific process with hands on science activities? Learned to love science and observe all the ways it affects the world around you? If you are a Torrey Hills student, you have experienced many of these things and that is thanks to our Del Mar Union School District Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Uma Krishnan. Students know Mrs. Krishnan as a dynamic, creative and caring teacher, whose science lab is like a visit to a great museum. Her peers here at Torrey Hills know her as a teacher who never accepts the status quo and is always stretching her teaching with new technologies and concepts to make science accessible, engaging and fun for all students.  Thank you, Mrs. Krishnan, for making science a never ending adventure for Torrey Hills students and staff!

Pasta for Pennies begins this week!

Pasta for Pennies

This is the fifth year Torrey Hills will participate in "Pasta for Pennies", a nationwide school and youth program to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  Beginning March 17 through March 28, we will ask our students to collect spare change and bring it to their classrooms to donate to this once a year fundraiser.

Last year more than 120 schools in San Diego County participated in Pasta for Pennies and raised over $278,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  All money raised by schools in our community is used to fund research to find a cure for leukemia and related blood cancers, and to help the patient-aid progrram improve the quality of life for patients and their families.

For two weeeks, students may bring in pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, or more, to put in the collection box in their classroom.  We think this is a wonderful opportunity for our students to be part of a project to help other children and their families.  By working together, our students have a chance to learn how even a few pennies can add up and make a difference in the lives of others.

We thank you for your support.

Torrey Hills Students contribute to "Operation Love" and make some new friends.

Torrey Hills Elementary School students, with coordination by the Student Council paid a special visit to the residents of Casa del Mar Residential Care with a special delivery. They brought lots and lots of Valentine's Day cards created by students at Torrey Hills Elementary School. Residents read through each one with great big smiles and really enjoyed all the personal notes.

Torrey Hills welcomes San Diego Padre Adrian Gonzalez

What was a routine weekend errand with his parents resulted in a classroom visit from a San Diego Padre for lucky Torrey Hills 5th grader, Matthew Razuki. After a visit to MOR Furniture for Less in San Diego, and seeing an offer to win a classroom visit from San Diego Padre first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, Matthew signed up. A few weeks later, they received the message on their answering machine that Matthew would have a special guest in class on Friday, November 30. "At first, my class didn't believe it,” says Matthew. But on Friday, a call to the office to pick up his special guest put to rest any doubts. Students in Matthew’s class brought in their Padre memorabilia for Mr. Gonzalez to sign. Later, Mr. Gonzalez who grew up locally, fielded questions, with Matthew by his side, from the students of Torrey Hills Elementary School. The Padre gave advice to students on doing well in school, and said that, had his baseball career not developed, he would have gone into engineering. Congratulations, Matthew!
