• Meet Ms. Rhoades...

I love what I do! I have been teaching for a little over 25 years, and each year I am in awe of how much there is for me to learn - from the children with all of their individual learning styles to the best ways to deliver a motivating and rigorous curriculum.

On my first day of kindergarten, I was placed into a first grade classroom. I was younger and smaller than all my classmates. This situation, compounded by extreme shyness, made the first five years of elementary school very difficult. It wasn't until I made a connection with my sixth grade teacher that I began to come out of my shell. Miss Gilman provided a safe and fun learning environment in which I was able to take risks and excel. If I can touch just one of my student's life in the way that Miss Gilman did for me, than I will have succeeded.

I received my undergraduate degree in Latin American Iberian Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1991. During this time, I studied abroad in Spain for two semesters. I continued the graduate program at UCSB, earning a bilingual/cross cultural teaching credential in 1992. A month after receiving my credential, I was hired in the South Bay Union School District where I taught bilingual education for seven years. In 1999, I moved to the Del Mar Union School District, and have been here ever since. I am extremely grateful to work in such an amazing school district!

When I am not teaching, I love going to the beach and surfing with my two children, Olivia and Kai. I also enjoy making jewelry, cooking, reading, being outdoors, exercising, and getting together with friends.
