  • Welcome to First Grade in Room H3 2017/2018!

Posted by Mike Honsberger on 8/22/2015

Welcome to the 2018/2019 school year and I hope you had a great summer! I'm looking to meeting all of my first grade students on Monday and looking forward to a fun year of friends and learning. A few items to make a smooth transition for your first grade student on Monday.

    • That mountain of supplies you purchased (thank you!) can be sorted outside of Room H3 on Monday morning. I'll have tubs out front for you to place markers, pencils, facial tissue, etc. in.

    • Please make sure your student keeps their pencil box and box of crayons with them and they'll carry that right into class when we come in.

    •  Backpacks will be hung on the sawhorse racks outside of Room H3. This year, we will keep snack and lunch in our backpack as we are very close to the snack and lunch tables.

    • Once you are all squared away outside of Room H3, please walk with your child out to the blacktop and we line up on the 'H3' line next to the primary restroom. Check out the new play structure!

    • Last, parents put on your best game face as Mr. Honsberger walks your big first grader into the start of a great school year! This can be an anxious time for students (and parents) so in the event your child is showing signs of anxiety as we head to class, my experience has been the best thing to do is give your child a big hug, a 'chin up' and then move on to your day rather than linger around the classroom hallway. I promise, they'll greet you in the afternoon with a huge smile on their face!

    • Most importantly, please make sure your child knows their plan for after school whether you are picking them up at the gate or at the drive thru. I walk students out through the front gate everyday - this year, first grade will exit at the flag pole gate - and I will make sure they get to you!

    • See you at Back to School Night on Thursday night where more information will follow. Welcome to first grade in Room H3!

We spoke about the 'solar storm' coming our way in class on Friday. Check out this clip to see the visual effects of a solar storm via aurora borealis!

  • Weather!

Muggy, almost tropical conditions in San Diego with yet another possibility of strong thunder and lightning storms - all courtesy of Hurricane Norbert! Check out this neat website of wind patterns on earth. If you zoom in to the Eastern Pacific you can see a dissipating Hurricane Norbert spinning this weather into Southern California!Wind Map

  • Is knowing obsolete?

Posted by Mike Honsberger on 9/1/2014

I had some time to listen to Ted Radio this weekend and heard some interesting thoughts on education. One of the questions that has been asked in recent years is whether or not knowing is obsolete. Some powerful thoughts and examples of why it just might be.

  • Welcome to First Grade 2014/2015!

Posted by Mike Honsberger on 8/22/2014

Welcome back to school and I hope you had a great summer! I'm looking to meeting all of my first grade students on Monday and looking forward to a fun year of friends and learning. A few items to make a smooth transition for your first grade student on Monday.

    • That mountain of supplies you purchased (thank you!) can be sorted outside of Room L3 on Monday morning. I'll have tubs out front for you to place markers, facial tissue, etc. in. If you pre-ordered supplies, I'll have your child's items already distributed.
    • Please make sure your student keeps their pencil box and box of crayons with them and they'll carry that right into class when we come in. If you pre-ordered supplies I'll have your child's pencil box in class and they'll get it when they come in.
    •  Backpacks will be hung on the sawhorse racks outside of Room L3. I'll have a lunch tub and snack tub outside, too, to place your child's lunch and snack into. If they keep snack in their lunch box, that is fine. No need to separate them.
    • Once you are all squared away outside of Room L3, please walk with your child out to the blacktop and we line up on the blue 'L' next to the primary blacktop.
    • Last, put on your best game face as Mr. Honsberger walks your big first grader into the start of a great school year!
    • Please make sure your child knows their plan for after school whether you are picking them up at the gate or at the drive thru. I walk students out through the front gate everyday and will make sure they get to you!

  • Six more weeks of winter!

Posted by Mike Honsberger on 2/4/2014
Sunday was Groundhog Day and according to Punxsutawney Phil we'll have six more weeks of winter! In Southern California we're not complaining but keep an eye on the upcoming drought the state looks like it'll be facing this year. Check out this image of our snowpack from last year compared to this year.

  • Hour of Code

Posted by Mike Honsberger on 1/10/2014
We visited the computer lab on Monday and used our skills in computer programming to work on the Hour of Code. We have the page bookmarked in our second grade mathematics page for you to visit. Feel free to have your child log in at home to keep working on it. A couple other pieces of software you might investigate are Scratch and Lightbot

  • Happy New Year and how 'bout that weather?

Posted by Mike Honsberger on 1/8/2014
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great break and enjoyed this spectacular southern California weather. If you've got friends or family on the east coast, you know how lucky we are as they suffered through a severe winter storm this week. As that storm marched across the Atlantic, it generated some pretty spectacular surf that a few brave souls were able to ride. You can check some footage out here. Hard not to close your eyes at the three minute mark in this specific clip!
