Health RequirementsUnder a new law known as SB 277, beginning January 1, 2016 exemptions based on personal beliefs will no longer be an option for the vaccines that are currently required for entry into child care or school in California. For more information, read a letter from our district nurses here.
Students Entering KindergartenPlease be aware of the immunizations that are required before your child may begin kindergarten in August. Please review your child's immunization record to determine what immunizations he/she is missing. The boosters that are traditionally given at age five years may be given after 4 years of age. Even if your child turns five after August of the enrolling year, immunizations must be completed before they can begin kindergarten. The chickenpox (varicella) vaccine is also required for kindergarten entry. If your child had the chickenpox disease, your doctor must note that on your child's immunization record. Your child will not be assigned a teacher until all required immunizations are completed.
- Polio: 4 doses, but three are enough if at least one was given after the 4th birthday
- DTP/DtaP: 5 doses, but 4 are enough if at least one was given on or after the 4th birthday
- MMR: 2 doses, both must be on or after the 1st birthday
- Hepatitis B: 3 doses
- Varicella: 1 dose or documentation of disease by your doctor noted on immunization record
California law, Education Code Section 49452.8, now requires that your child have an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by May 31 in either kindergarten or first grade, whichever is his or her first year in public school. Assessments that have happened within the 12 months before your child enters school also meet this requirement. The law specifies that the assessment must be done by a licensed California dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional.
When you register your kindergartner you will be asked for your child's immunization card, The Report of Health Checkup and Oral Health Assessment/Waiver Request. If the physical exam has not been completed prior to registration, then you must turn in the green form as soon as it is completed. Please contact the Health office at your school, if you have any questions.
Students Entering Grade 1-6
The immunizations listed above are also required for students entering grades 1-6.
The Following is for 1st Grade Only
In addition to the above immunizations, a physical exam is required by the State of California before starting first grade. Verification of this physical is documented on The Report of Health Checkup (green form).California law, Education Code Section 49452.8, now requires that your child have an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by May 31 in either kindergarten or first grade, whichever is his or her first year in public school.
