Message from the Superintendent

November 2018

How do we best prepare our students so they have the widest range of options in 2028 (when today’s 6th graders graduate from college) and 2035 (when today’s kindergartners graduate from college)?

Companies today are growing and rapidly changing.  I recently visited the headquarters of several such companies, Lyft and Google and Salesforce, in the Bay Area.  It is always interesting to take a peek into the world of another organization.  When we do so, we tend to make comparisons with what we are familiar in our own organizations or experiences.  And we also notice things that stand out as different or thought provoking.

Employees

In every area, the work spaces were inhabited by people in their 20’s and 30’s, many of whom had only been working there a short amount of time.  Read more.

Work Spaces

There was a great variety of spaces available for employees to use at any time.   Read more.

Flexibility and Agency

There was noticeable flexibility.  People had work to accomplish and great agency to accomplish that work.  Read more.

What does this mean for us?

We are not a private company. So why do we care? Read more.

At Lyft and Google and Salesforce they want happy, healthy employees who are flexible thinkers, always learning, and do great work as part of a team.

In DMUSD, we want happy, healthy students who are flexible thinkers, always learning, and do great work as part of a team.  We want happy, healthy employees who are flexible thinkers, always learning, and do great work as part of a team.

It’s something for us to think about…

Sincerely,

Holly McClurg, Ph.D.

Superintendent
