Grading and Assessment
In Del Mar Union School District, we are committed to an assessment and reporting system grounded in research and aligned with current pedagogical practices. This system is personalized for each student, celebrates progress, communicates with all stakeholders, and empowers students as capable and evolving learners who demonstrate agency and ownership over their growth. Our report cards align with our instructional practices, and reflect of our assessment grading and reporting values.
Standards-Based Grading
Standards-Based Grading
We use standards-based grading with the proficiency levels of Beginning, Developing, Secure, and Exceeding. Our expectations for each trimester grow throughout the year. We break down the end-of-year standards into skills that build throughout the year. At the end of the trimester, student understanding is identified through the progress indicator key on their report card.
Progress Indicator Key
E
Student performance consistently and independently exceeds grade level expectations for this trimester with accuracy and a high level of quality
S
Student performance is secure and meets grade level expectations for this trimester
D
Student performance is developing steadily toward grade level expectations for this trimester
B
Student performance is beginning to progress toward grade level expectations for this trimester with additional time and/or support
We determine proficiency using evidence gathered over time, including assignments, group learning, classroom observations, and assessments. During collaborative learning, we can listen to each child’s contributions and explanations to better understand their individual thinking. Together, this body of evidence helps us identify what your child can do independently and plan the support or challenge they need.
Assessment also helps students understand themselves as learners. Through feedback, reflection, and goal setting, we help them recognize their strengths and next steps to take an active role in their growth.
