Immunization Requirements

Immunization Requirements

Immunization Requirements

All children are required to have their vaccinations fully completed/up to date before enrolling in grades K- 6th unless exempted as provided by law.

Exemptions based on personal/religious beliefs are no longer an option for vaccines required for school entry in California. Personal/religious beliefs exemptions on file for a child already attending child care or school will remain valid until the child reaches the next immunization checkpoint at kindergarten (including transitional kindergarten) or 7th grade.

Starting January 1, 2021, medical exemptions, either permanent or temporary, can only be issued through the California Immunization Registrty - Medical Exemption website (CAIR-ME) by physicians licensed in California. Schools may only accept new medical exemptions that are issued using CAIR-ME.

Enrollment paperwork will not be accepted without complete immunization records showing that the student meets California school admission requirements.

For more information about SB 277, please see https://www.shotsforschool.org.

Required Immunizations

Required Immunizations

Please be aware of the immunizations that are required before your child may enroll in kindergarten. Please review your child's immunization record to determine what immunizations he/she is missing. The boosters that are traditionally given at age five years may be given after 4 years of age. Even if your child turns five after August of the enrolling year, immunizations must be completed before they can enroll in kindergarten. Two doses of the chickenpox (varicella) vaccine are also required for kindergarten entry.Your child's enrollment paperwork will not be accepted until all required immunizations are completed.

We understand there may be concern among parents about accessing health care during the pandemic, but it is important that our children stay on schedule for vaccinations to avoid an outbreak of preventable diseases like mumps or whooping cough. If you have concerns about obtaining the required immunizations, please reach out to your primary care physician. Most providers continue to offer well-check and vaccination appointments, and are taking extra safety and hygiene precautions.

The following are the required immunizations for students entering Kindergarten:

  • Polio: 4 doses, but three are enough if at least one was given after the 4th birthday
  • DTP/DtaP: 5 doses, but 4 are enough if at least one was given on or after the 4th birthday
  • MMR: 2 doses, both must be on or after the 1st birthday
  • Hepatitis B: 3 doses
  • Varicella: 2 doses.
    • For children who have had varicella/chickenpox, an immunization record that indicates a "history of chickenpox disease" is not sufficient documentation to meet school requirements. A medical exemption must be provided if 2 doses of this immunization have not been administered.
Kindergarten Health/Dental Exams

Kindergarten Health/Dental Exams

In addition to the above immunizations, a physical exam is required by the State of California before starting first grade. Verification of this physical is documented on The Report of Health Checkup (green form). The Del Mar Union School District asks that the physical exam be completed before starting kindergarten.

California law, Education Code Section 49452.8, now requires that your child have an oral health assessment (dental check-up) by May 31 in either kindergarten or first grade, whichever is his or her first year in public school. Assessments that have happened within the 12 months before your child enters school also meet this requirement. The law specifies that the assessment must be done by a licensed California dentist or other licensed or registered dental health professional. The Del Mar Union School District asks that the oral health exam be completed before starting kindergarten.

When you register your kindergartner you will be asked for your child's immunization card, The Report of Health Checkup and Oral Health Assessment/Waiver Request. If the physical exam or oral health exam has not been completed prior to registration, then you must turn in the form as soon as it is completed. Please contact the Health office at your school if you have any questions.
