Artificial Intelligence

Artificial intelligence is not something on the horizon—it is already shaping the world children are growing up in.  By helping staff and students understand and use AI responsibly while prioritizing human connection, we are equipping them with the knowledge, judgment, and confidence they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

Effective, Ethical Use
Our district is committed to ensuring that staff and students engage with artificial intelligence effectively and responsibly.  The following Board Policies provide guidance for both students and staff:  Artificial Intelligence (BP 0441);  Student Use of Technology (BP 6163.4); Employee Use of Technology (BP 4040); Academic Honesty (BP 5131.9). Our AI initiative is also aligned with federal, state, and local laws.  We adhere to federal laws like the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA), ensuring the protection of student records and online safety. At the state level, we are guided by California laws, including the Student Online Personal Information Protection Act (SOPIPA), which prohibits the use of student data for targeted advertising.

AI Literacy and Digital Citizenship
The district provides ongoing professional learning to equip staff to use AI effectively and safely to support the development of the skills outlined in our Portrait of a Learner, as well as personalized instruction, differentiated content, and specific, timely feedback to students.  For our K–6 educators, AI literacy provides tools to enhance instruction, personalize learning, and foster equity in the classroom. It helps teachers use AI responsibly and creatively while modeling critical thinking and ethical decision-making for students.

For students, AI literacy builds awareness of how AI influences daily life, from search results to digital media. It develops their ability to evaluate AI outputs, understand their limitations, and make thoughtful, ethical choices, while reinforcing the idea that human judgment remains central to learning and problem-solving.
